Dear beloved, when this website was established it was and remains the intention of its author to be informative and educational of the Orthodox faith to members of the Greek Orthodox Church in Adelaide.  In doing so it is always necessary that truth be made known and that misleading or incorrect statements made by those who profess to “enlighten” us be corrected.

AUTOCEPHALIC GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF AMERICA AND AUSTRALIA

AUTOCEPHALIC GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF AMERICA AND AUSTRALIA

In particular we have found false public statements made in an article titled A Brief History of the so-called “Autocephalic Greek Orthodox Church of America and Australia” which is administered by the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA). Here it is alleged that a demand was made on those Greek Orthodox Communities in existence to “hand over ownership of their churches” to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. The article further identified His Eminence “Archbishop Ezekiel Kefalas”, the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia at the time, as the person making such demands on those communities.

Apart from the obvious factual error with Archbishop Ezekiel’s last name (his last name was Tsoukalas not Kefalas; His Grace Bishop Ezekiel Kefalas is the current assistant bishop in Melbourne) the above-mentioned allegation is completely false. It is made without any foundation since at no time did His Eminence Archbishop Ezekiel make such a demand.

Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (Inc.)These false claims continue to be circulated by lovers of evil to this day, who in their efforts to sabotage any movements towards reconciliation in Adelaide or anywhere for that matter, distributed flyers claiming that churches belonging to the “Autocephalic Greek Orthodox Church of America and Australia” will be sold and closed down if union with the Archdiocese takes place. The author of this flyer goes so far as to reference what they perceive as “Canonical Law [sic]” in which they state that “an Archdiocese of Australia’s Parish Church with [sic] a 4k radius will take precedence to remain open over a GOCSA church”.  A copy of this flyer was published in the June 2011 (no. 67) edition of “O Parikos”.

The absurdity and naivety of these claims is highlighted by the following facts:

  • Currently, 58 of the 118 parishes in the Archdiocese are parish-communities that own their own property.
  • The recent healing that took place in Sydney where the three Greek Community churches were reconciled to the Archdiocese has resulted in no closure of churches. One of these parishes (Holy Trinity) is only 1.5 km away from another Archdiocesan parish (St. Sophia) and is even on the same street!
  • Past schisms that have been healed in Melbourne and Hobart have resulted in no closure of Churches irrespective of their proximity to other churches of the Archdiocese.
  • In its history the Archdiocese has never closed nor sold a parish.

We go so far as to invite those continuing to cite His Eminence Archbishop Ezekiel of blessed memory or his successors to produce any documentation which proves their claims.

Mr T Maras, Mr E Elovaris and Mr E Mavrogiorgis remain unaccountable for their irresponsible conduct [refer below], which is in breach of their fiduciary obligations to the GOCSA, to the members and of the Act.

On 19 December 2010 at a Federation meeting Mr T Maras, Mr E Elovaris and Mr E Mavrogiorgis [GOCSA reps] supported the decision without prior approval of GOCSA Executive Committee and/or General Meeting.  It put the Community’s churches at risk of closure and/or the assets eventually being sold off.  “The Federation renewed its past decision regarding the ecclesiastical [issue] and unanimously determined in future developments its representatives would participate with the Holy Archdiocese of Australia [GOAA].”  [Source: Federation of Greek Orthodox Communities of Australia Media Release 21/12/2010]

Why did Mr Elovaris try to stop the Media Release from being distributed at the GOCSA Annual General Meeting [29/5/2011]?  Why not explain that under Canonical Law, an Archdiocese of Australia’s Parish Church with a 4k radius will take precedence to remain open over a GOCSA church?  Mr Mares [sic] commented that he did not care if 3 churches closed.  Their decision is in breach of their fiduciary obligations to the GOCSA, to our members and of the Act.
